U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized NATO and European Union member states for continuing to purchase oil from Russia, calling it a key problem undermining Western efforts to counter Moscow.

“The problem is NATO and EU countries are still buying Russian oil,” Trump said, highlighting what he sees as a contradiction between Europe’s support for Ukraine and its ongoing energy trade with Russia.

Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration with what he perceives as Europe’s reliance on Russian energy, arguing it weakens sanctions and emboldens the Kremlin amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. His remarks come amid renewed discussions within NATO and the EU on tightening restrictions on Russian energy exports and increasing energy independence.

Several EU countries remain partially dependent on Russian oil and gas, despite sanctions and efforts to diversify supplies. While imports have decreased significantly since the start of the conflict, some nations continue to rely on Russian energy through various indirect channels.

Trump’s comments are likely to fuel further debate over transatlantic unity and the effectiveness of economic measures aimed at pressuring Russia.
