A social media post shared by President Donald Trump has triggered strong criticism after it included a racist depiction of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

President Trump said he did not see the part of a video that showed the Obamas depicted as apes before it was posted on his social media account. The clip appeared at the end of a minute-long video that mainly focused on claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The video was later removed following widespread backlash.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said he had only watched the beginning of the video and that it was posted by a staff member. He said he liked the video’s message about voter fraud but would not apologise, stating he did not believe he made a mistake. A White House official later said the post had been shared in error by a staffer.

The video drew sharp criticism from members of both political parties. Several Republican lawmakers described it as racist, offensive, and unacceptable, calling for its removal and an apology. Even after the post was taken down, criticism continued from within Trump’s party and from opposition leaders.

The clip was originally taken from a social media post created months earlier and also portrayed other political figures as animals. The Obamas have not commented on the incident.

The White House initially defended the post as an internet meme but reversed its stance after intense criticism. Questions have since been raised about the approval process for posts on the president’s account. The incident adds to ongoing debate around political messaging, accountability, and the use of social media by those in power.
