President Donald Trump suggested on Monday (September 15) that a deal has been reached with China over the future of TikTok, the short-video platform facing a U.S. ban unless sold to non-Chinese owners.

In a post on his social media platform, Trump wrote that U.S. and Chinese officials had resolved an issue involving “a ‘certain’ company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save.” He added that he will hold a call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.

Although Trump did not directly name TikTok, the remarks follow months of negotiations over the app’s U.S. operations. Under current law, TikTok must divest from its Chinese parent company ByteDance or cease functioning in the United States.

The statement comes after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Madrid on Sunday. A Treasury Department release confirmed TikTok was among the topics discussed.

The Chinese government has not commented on Trump’s announcement. Analysts note that while Trump has previously extended TikTok’s compliance deadlines, the outcome of talks could determine whether the app continues to operate in the United States.
