European and Nato leaders have warned that a tariff threat by former US president Donald Trump, reportedly linked to Greenland, could trigger a dangerous downward spiral in transatlantic relations. Leaders from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement expressing concern ahead of an emergency meeting of EU ambassadors.

The statement underlined that economic pressure tied to territorial or political disputes risks escalating tensions and harming cooperation. Several European governments responded individually, stressing that a trade war would benefit no one. Norway said such actions damage shared economic interests, while Finland’s prime minister said the tariff approach does not serve any party.

Germany took a firmer tone, with a minister stating the country would not be blackmailed. Dutch officials also described the threat as unacceptable pressure. France’s president reportedly urged the European Union to consider using its anti-coercion instrument if tariffs were imposed.

Italy’s prime minister called the tariff threat a mistake, and Spain’s leader warned that any escalation involving Greenland would only benefit rival global powers. Denmark confirmed its foreign minister would visit Nato allies to discuss the issue. The EU has since called an emergency meeting, signalling that the matter is being treated as a serious diplomatic and economic concern.
