President Donald Trump welcomed Argentina’s libertarian leader Javier Milei to the White House on Tuesday, as the United States proposed a $20 billion plan to help stabilize Argentina’s struggling currency.
The meeting highlighted the close ties between the two leaders, with Milei — a vocal admirer of Trump — praising the U.S. president’s “peacemaking efforts” and predicting that his policies would bring “prosperity.” The proposed financial rescue package aims to calm Argentina’s deepening economic crisis, marked by soaring inflation and dwindling foreign reserves.
However, the plan has sparked division among some of Trump’s traditional supporters, who view the move as inconsistent with his long-standing “America First” platform. The U.S. government itself remains in a funding shutdown, adding further political strain to the proposal.
Trump emphasized that continued U.S. economic assistance would depend on whether Milei and his party remain in power and continue their market-oriented reforms. Argentina faces national midterm elections on October 26, a key test of public support for Milei’s cost-cutting and free-market agenda.
