US President Donald Trump has announced plans to withdraw the United States from 66 United Nations and international organisations, marking a major shift in Washington’s global engagement. The decision was outlined in a presidential memorandum released by the White House, following a review of bodies deemed contrary to US interests.
The move includes ending participation and cutting all funding to 35 non-UN organisations and 31 UN entities. Among those listed are the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the UN Democracy Fund, and the UN Population Fund, which focuses on maternal and child health. Several bodies involved in protecting civilians and children during armed conflicts are also affected.
Although the White House categorised the IPCC as a non-UN organisation, it operates under the UN system and provides scientific assessments on climate change used by governments worldwide. The announcement adds to earlier withdrawals under Trump’s second term, including exits from the World Health Organization, the Paris climate agreement, and the UN Human Rights Council.
Despite distancing the US from multilateral institutions, Trump has continued to exert influence at the UN, including through sanctions threats and the use of US veto power at the Security Council. The United Nations said it would respond formally to the announcement.
