U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday (October 9) announced that the long-awaited release of hostages held in Gaza is expected early next week, marking what they called a major step toward peace in the Middle East. Speaking during a cabinet meeting at the White House, Rubio said that “very soon, we are going to see 20 living human beings emerge from the darkness into the light for the first time in two years,” referring to the planned release set for Monday or Tuesday.
Rubio praised Trump’s “commitment to the human aspect of reuniting these families,” calling the effort an historic achievement. Trump said the first priority of the peace plan was to secure the release of all hostages before moving to broader negotiations on disarmament and reconstruction.
“They’re all dancing in the streets,” Trump said, describing scenes of celebration in Israel and neighboring Arab nations. He confirmed that he would address Israel’s Knesset if formally invited and added that wealthy partner countries would help fund rebuilding efforts in Gaza to “create better conditions for people.”
