During a joint press conference marking the end of his state visit to the UK, US President Donald Trump suggested that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer could consider using the military to address illegal migration across the English Channel. Trump said he had raised the issue with Starmer during their meeting at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence, and referenced his own policies on border enforcement in the United States.

Trump stated, “You have people coming in and I told the prime minister I would stop it, and it doesn’t matter if you call out the military.” He later told Fox News that immigration was a political vulnerability for Starmer and advised him to take a firm stance.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has increased deportations and tightened border controls.

The state visit also included meetings with King Charles at Windsor Castle and a state banquet. A new UK-US technology agreement was announced, focusing on cooperation in AI, quantum computing, and emerging tech sectors.

Despite the agreements, White House officials downplayed the visit’s potential to significantly affect trade or foreign policy. A US commerce official suggested UK regulations like the digital services tax may limit further investment.
