On January 22, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump rescinded his invitation for Canada to join the “Board of Peace” initiative. This decision followed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticized powerful nations using economic integration and tariffs as leverage.
Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post, stating the withdrawal of Canada’s invitation to join the Board, which aims to address global conflicts. He emphasized the board’s exclusivity, calling it the most prestigious assembly of leaders ever formed.
Prime Minister Carney, who had planned to accept the invitation, had recently delivered a speech advocating for an end to the rules-based global order, drawing a standing ovation at Davos. Carney’s call for “middle powers” to resist American influence, particularly after Canada’s trade deal with China, prompted Trump’s response. Trump retorted, reminding Carney that Canada’s prosperity is tied to the United States.
The withdrawal of Canada’s invitation follows the formal launch of the board, which initially aimed to address the Gaza ceasefire. Member nations, including Argentina, Turkey, and Pakistan, must contribute $1 billion each to the board’s funding.
