U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Sunday, September 14, accompanied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The visit came shortly after Rubio’s arrival in Israel for discussions on the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians and Israel’s planned operation in Gaza.
At the site, considered Judaism’s holiest prayer location, Rubio and Netanyahu placed written notes into the wall and were presented with a prayer book, according to officials.
Rubio’s trip follows heightened regional tensions, including Israel’s recent strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar and continued settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. His visit is aimed at reaffirming U.S. support for Israel while addressing the impact of recent developments on wider U.S. policy goals in the region.
The secretary of state said the U.S.-Israel relationship remains strong but noted that discussions would include how Israel’s actions could affect President Donald Trump’s objectives of securing the release of hostages held by Hamas, eliminating militant groups, and ending the war in Gaza.
