British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at 10 Downing Street on Friday, with discussions expected to focus on the AUKUS security pact, as well as developments in Gaza and Ukraine.
The leaders’ meeting comes during the 2025 Global Progressive Action Summit in London, which is also attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Starmer and Albanese posed for cameras and held a seated discussion after a formal welcome at Downing Street.
AUKUS, the strategic alliance between Australia, the UK, and the United States, has significant implications for defence, technology, and geopolitical alignment. Under the pact, Australia is set to acquire nuclear-powered attack submarines from the next decade to strengthen its position in the Indo-Pacific, a move aimed at countering China’s regional ambitions.
In July, Australia signed a treaty with Britain to reinforce cooperation on the AUKUS nuclear submarine program over the next 50 years. The pact, originally agreed in 2021, is currently under review by the United States, following announcements earlier this year under the Trump administration.
The meeting signals continued coordination between London and Canberra on regional security and global strategic issues.
