Upasana Kamineni Konidela, entrepreneur and wife of actor Ram Charan, stirred widespread debate after advising young women to consider freezing their eggs so they could prioritise career growth and choose motherhood later. Speaking to students at IIT Hyderabad, she described egg freezing as the biggest insurance for women, allowing them to decide when to marry and have children once they are financially independent.
Her comments quickly drew both criticism and support. Many doctors argued that fertility does not follow career timelines, pointing out that success rates for egg freezing vary and decline as women age. Obstetrician Rajesh Parikh highlighted the emotional and financial strain of fertility treatments, noting that freezing eggs and IVF are expensive and offer no guarantee of pregnancy. Another doctor, Sunita Sayammagaru, stressed that even frozen eggs do not ensure a successful embryo transfer as age-related health factors still matter.
Supporters, however, felt Konidela’s message encouraged women to take control of their futures. Konidela later said she was glad her remarks initiated a healthy discussion and thanked people for responding respectfully. The video, posted on November 17, rapidly gained engagement, reflecting the sharp divide on the topic.
