Utah Governor Spencer Cox said on Sunday that the suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk is refusing to cooperate with investigators.
Speaking on ABC’s This Week, Cox confirmed that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who was arrested last week, remains in custody but has not confessed to authorities. “He is not cooperating, but all the people around him are cooperating. And I think that’s very important,” Cox said.
Robinson is accused of firing the single shot that killed Kirk during an outdoor speaking event in Utah attended by thousands. He was taken into custody roughly 33 hours after the incident, after relatives and a family friend alerted authorities that he had implied involvement.
Formal charges are expected to be filed on Tuesday, according to Cox. The governor called the shooting a “tragic circumstance” with wide repercussions for the state and the nation.
Cox was also asked about a New York Times report alleging Robinson communicated on Discord after the shooting, where he reportedly made comments joking about being the gunman. Authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of those messages.
The FBI is leading the investigation with state and local agencies assisting.
