Venezuela’s interior minister, Diosdado Cabello, has said that 100 people died in the US military operation that removed President Nicolás Maduro from power on Saturday. The government’s announcement on Wednesday marked the first official overall casualty figure since the raid, which has drawn global attention and widespread condemnation from Caracas.
Until now, Venezuelan authorities had released only limited numbers of the dead. The army had posted a list of 23 servicemembers killed, while Cuba confirmed that 32 of its military and intelligence personnel stationed in Venezuela also died during the operation. Cabello described many of Maduro’s security forces as having been killed “in cold blood” and said that Maduro sustained a leg injury in the raid, while his wife, Cilia Flores, suffered a head injury.
Cabello praised interim President Delcy Rodríguez for her leadership and noted that a week of national mourning had been declared for the military personnel killed in the incident. The claimed toll of 100 casualties underscores the heavy human cost of the operation and heightens tensions between Venezuela and the United States as Caracas reacts to the dramatic political changes.
