Venezuelans at home and abroad have made emotional appeals to opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, urging her to help restore political freedom in the country. The reactions have emerged following Machado’s recent public appearance in Oslo after months in hiding and her departure from Venezuela under dangerous circumstances.
Supporters gathered outside her hotel and in Venezuelan diaspora communities, many visibly emotional, calling on Machado to continue leading the fight for democratic change. For many, she has become a symbol of resistance after Venezuela’s disputed election and the subsequent crackdown on dissent by the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
Machado had largely remained out of public view for nearly a year, resurfacing briefly during protests earlier in 2025 before going into hiding. Her supporters say her endurance despite personal risk has strengthened their belief that political change remains possible.
During interactions with supporters in Norway, Machado acknowledged the struggles of Venezuelans who have fled the country and those still living under economic hardship and political restrictions. She also met citizens who expressed hopes of returning to what they described as a free and democratic Venezuela.
While Machado has not outlined specific next steps, the emotional response underscores her continued influence within the opposition movement and the expectations many Venezuelans place on her leadership amid ongoing political uncertainty.
