An Australian firefighter died overnight while working to control a bushfire north of Sydney. Emergency crews were called to bushland near Bulahdelah after reports that a tree had fallen on a man. The 59-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest and died at the scene. Authorities said he had been helping contain a fire that had already burnt large areas of bushland and destroyed homes.

Australia’s prime minister said the death was a reminder of the risks faced by emergency workers who protect communities during dangerous conditions. Over the weekend, a fast-moving fire destroyed 16 homes on the Central Coast, a region home to thousands of residents who commute to Sydney. One resident from Koolewong described trying to save her family’s belongings before flames overtook their property.

Fire conditions eased overnight, allowing officials to lower danger alerts. However, temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius were forecast for parts of New South Wales, increasing the risk of further outbreaks. More than 50 fires continued to burn across the state on Monday.

In Tasmania, a separate blaze at Dolphin Sands destroyed 19 homes and damaged 40 more. In New Zealand, crews and helicopters were battling a new fire near Tongariro National Park.
