A striking natural phenomenon often described as a “flying whale” has been witnessed at the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve in eastern China’s Shandong province, where massive flocks of birds move in coordinated waves across the sky. The visual display, known as a “bird-wave,” highlights both the scale of migration and the ecological health of the reserve.

The Yellow River Delta plays a vital role in global bird migration, serving as an important wintering ground and stopover point for species travelling along international flyways. In recent decades, authorities have strengthened conservation measures, focusing on habitat restoration, wetland protection, and reduced human disturbance.

These sustained efforts have delivered measurable results. Over the past 30 years, the number of recorded bird species in the reserve has doubled, rising from 187 to 374. Each year, more than six million birds now breed, rest, or pass through the protected wetlands.

Environmental improvements have helped restore food chains and safe nesting areas, making the delta one of the most significant bird habitats in the region. The growing biodiversity and dramatic aerial displays stand as visible evidence of how long-term ecological protection can revive and sustain natural ecosystems.
