Japan continued assessing damage on Tuesday after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck late Monday night off the coast of Aomori, causing injuries, minor structural damage and small tsunami waves in several Pacific coastal communities.

Authorities reported at least 33 people injured, including one seriously, mostly due to falling objects. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said an emergency task force was formed and emphasized that the government was prioritizing people’s safety. She also urged residents to remain alert for aftershocks.

The quake occurred around 11:15 p.m., roughly 80 kilometers off Aomori. A tsunami of up to 70 centimeters was recorded in Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture, with smaller waves hitting other coastal areas. Some oyster rafts were damaged. All tsunami advisories were lifted by early Tuesday morning.

Around 800 homes temporarily lost power, and Shinkansen and several local train lines were suspended overnight. Power was mostly restored by morning, and rail operators aimed to resume bullet train services later in the day.

Hundreds of residents took shelter at Hachinohe Air Base as defence helicopters surveyed damage. In Hokkaido, part of a terminal at New Chitose Airport was closed after ceiling panels fell, leaving about 200 passengers stranded overnight.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority reported minor water spillage at a fuel reprocessing plant in Aomori but confirmed no safety risks.
