The White House confirmed on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump and his advisers are discussing a range of options to acquire Greenland, including the potential use of the US military, as part of broader national security planning. A statement said that the president views control of the Arctic island as a strategic priority aimed at deterring rival powers in the region, though detailed plans have not been released.
Greenland is a large, sparsely populated island with self-governance within the Kingdom of Denmark. Its location between North America and Europe gives it importance for defence and Arctic monitoring, and it also holds significant mineral resources.
European and Canadian leaders responded strongly to the US announcement, issuing statements affirming that Greenland belongs to its people and should be governed only by Denmark and Greenland under international law. They stressed that Arctic security should be pursued collectively through NATO cooperation rather than unilateral action.
The renewed focus on Greenland follows heightened US geopolitical activity, including a recent military operation in Venezuela. While military intervention remains a stated option in US discussions, Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected any transfer of control, and top European allies have voiced firm opposition.
