The White House criticized the Nobel Committee on Friday after it awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado instead of U.S. President Donald Trump.
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives,” said White House spokesperson Steven Cheung in a post on X. “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize to Machado for her “courageous defense of freedom” and her fight for democracy in Venezuela under the authoritarian rule of Nicolás Maduro. Machado, currently in hiding, has been recognized internationally for her advocacy of nonviolent resistance.
President Trump, who had actively campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize, recently announced a ceasefire and hostage release deal to end the war in Gaza—an achievement his supporters highlighted as a major diplomatic success. The president has not directly commented on the Nobel decision but shared multiple videos on Truth Social showing celebrations over the Gaza agreement.
While critics called the White House response politically charged, supporters argued that Trump’s global peace efforts warranted recognition from the Nobel Committee.
