Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Donald Trump during a phone call on Monday that Taiwan’s return to China remains a central part of the post-war international order. According to information released by state media, Xi said both nations once fought together against fascism and militarism and should now work to safeguard the outcomes of World War Two. A White House official confirmed the call but did not share further details.

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to take control of the island. Taiwan’s government rejects this claim and maintains that its future can only be decided by its people. The call between Xi and Trump came during a period of heightened regional tension, particularly after comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested that a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could prompt a military response from Japan.

Xi and Trump previously met in South Korea on October 30 following months of trade friction. Since that meeting, China has resumed buying U.S. soybeans and paused its expanded rare-earth export curbs, while the United States lowered tariffs on China by 10 percent. Xi said relations have since improved and urged continued cooperation.
