Canadian PM Mark Carney Says He Would Arrest Netanyahu if He Enters Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has affirmed that his government will uphold the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he would honor former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s pledge to detain Netanyahu if he enters Canada.

In an interview with Bloomberg Podcasts last week, Carney was asked whether he would maintain Trudeau’s position regarding the ICC warrant. “Yes,” Carney replied, confirming that he would be “prepared to do that.”

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu earlier this year over alleged war crimes related to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Canada, a founding member of the ICC, is legally obligated to comply with such warrants.

Carney also reiterated his government’s stance on recognizing a Palestinian state, calling it a priority but emphasizing that recognition alone was not the ultimate goal. “Recognition is not the end,” he said. “The end is a free and viable Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security with the state of Israel.”

Carney’s comments mark a clear continuation of Trudeau’s foreign policy approach, underscoring Canada’s commitment to international law and a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
