France Urges Reopening of Strait of Hormuz With Conditions

France has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz but warned that it should not come at the expense of security or strategic interests. French Finance Minister Roland Lescure said the vital shipping route must resume operations “but not at any price,” reflecting concerns over the conditions required to ensure safe passage.

His remarks followed discussions among leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) in Washington, where officials emphasized the seriousness of disruptions affecting one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. The Strait of Hormuz handles a significant share of global oil shipments, and its closure has heightened fears of prolonged economic instability.

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to host further talks in Paris with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, focusing on ensuring safe navigation through the strait once a ceasefire is achieved in the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

European leaders are seeking to coordinate a unified approach that balances the urgent need to restore global trade flows with maintaining pressure on regional actors to uphold security guarantees. Officials have not specified what conditions would be required for reopening the route, but analysts suggest they may include mine-clearing operations, naval escorts, and broader diplomatic agreements.

The situation remains closely tied to developments in the wider conflict, with policymakers indicating that any lasting solution for the Strait of Hormuz will depend on de-escalation and sustained international cooperation.
