Iran tries to show calm as tensions with US, Israel rise

Iran on Saturday released rare photos of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attending public prayers at the tomb of the Islamic Republic’s founder, marking 47 years since the 1979 revolution. The images were published amid weeks of domestic unrest and fears of a potential US military strike, and appeared aimed at countering rumours that Khamenei was hidden in an underground bunker.

At the same time, Iran’s army chief, Amir Hatami, warned the United States and Israel against military action, saying Iran’s forces are on high alert after heavy US deployments in the Gulf. He insisted Iran’s nuclear expertise cannot be eliminated, even as US officials said Tehran might seek a diplomatic deal to avoid strikes.

Newly released documents come as tensions escalate over Iran’s crackdown on widespread protests that erupted late last year. Khamenei and other officials have rejected claims that he went into hiding, using the public images to show leadership continuity and strength.

Iranian officials have also said any US attack would threaten regional security, signalling firm resistance against external pressure. Washington has increased its naval presence in the region amid international concern over Iran’s domestic situation and its nuclear programme.

Bottom line: Tehran is trying to project stability at home while warning the US and Israel against military strikes, underscored by rare public appearances by its top leader and stern comments from military officials.
