Italy has suspended the automatic renewal of its defence cooperation agreement with Israel, marking a significant shift in relations between the two countries amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the decision was taken “in light of the current situation,” referring to recent developments in the region, including Israeli military actions in Lebanon and broader instability linked to the ongoing conflict.
The agreement, originally signed in 2003, covered cooperation in areas such as military equipment, training, and technology exchange, and was set to renew automatically every five years. Italy’s move effectively halts that renewal process.
Tensions between the two countries have increased in recent weeks. Italy has criticized Israeli strikes in Lebanon, which have caused significant casualties, and recently summoned Israel’s ambassador after warning shots were fired at Italian peacekeepers serving under a United Nations mission.
The decision reflects a broader diplomatic shift by Italy, which has traditionally been one of Israel’s closer allies in Europe. Analysts suggest the move is also influenced by domestic political pressure and growing concern over the humanitarian and economic consequences of the conflict.
While Israeli officials have downplayed the practical impact of the suspension, the development highlights increasing divisions among Western allies over the handling of the Middle East crisis.
