Lahore has once again been ranked the most polluted city in the world, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at a hazardous 274, according to global air monitoring data reported by ARY News on Sunday. The alarming air pollution levels come despite recent government efforts to combat smog in the city.
The AQI in various Lahore neighborhoods reached dangerous highs, with Allama Iqbal Town registering a staggering 459, followed by Gulberg at 396, Lahore Airport at 398, Shadman at 384, and Model Town at 362. The citywide average AQI stood at 183, placing it in the “unhealthy” category, particularly risky for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions.
In response, environmental authorities have urged the public to limit outdoor activities. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has launched its first anti-smog gun operation in Lahore, starting in the Kahna area. Officials claim the operation has already led to a 70% reduction in air pollution levels locally.
Slight improvement in air quality is anticipated later in the day due to increased wind activity, though long-term solutions remain critical.
