Somaliland Signals Willingness to Trade Minerals and Bases for US Recognition

Somaliland has said it is ready to offer mineral access and military bases to the United States as it seeks wider international recognition.

Officials from Somaliland said the proposal reflects their belief that cooperation with Washington could lead to a formal understanding with the current US administration. The region declared autonomy from Somalia in 1991 and has since operated with its own governing institutions, currency, security forces, and travel documents.

Khadar Hussein Abdi, a senior official in the Somaliland presidency, stated that his government is open to granting exclusive access to minerals as well as hosting military facilities. He expressed confidence that an agreement could be reached with the administration of Donald Trump. Somaliland leaders argue that such arrangements could strengthen security partnerships and economic cooperation.

Somalia continues to view Somaliland as an integral part of its territory, a position supported by the African Union, which has warned that recognition of breakaway regions could set a risky precedent for stability across the continent.

In recent months, Somaliland has highlighted its natural resources, including lithium and coltan, and its strategic location across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen. The region also drew attention after Israel became the first nation to formally recognise it, establishing diplomatic ties with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi.

Despite these developments, opposition from Somalia and several African states remains strong, keeping Somaliland’s international status uncertain.
