Syria Assumes Control of Former US Military Bases in Northeast

Syria has taken control of several military bases in the northeastern province of Hasakah following the departure of United States forces, marking a significant shift in the security landscape of the region. The final convoy of US troops and equipment reportedly left the Qasrak air base, completing a phased withdrawal process.

According to local reports, Syrian government forces have since moved into the facilities previously used by US personnel as part of counterterrorism operations and regional stabilization efforts. The transition includes the handover of infrastructure, airstrips, and support buildings that had been maintained by coalition forces during their deployment.

The withdrawal comes after a period of reduced US military presence in parts of northeastern Syria, where American forces had been stationed primarily to support operations against extremist groups and to work alongside allied local forces. The departure from Qasrak is seen as part of a broader repositioning of US assets in the region.

Syrian authorities have stated that regaining control of the bases strengthens national sovereignty and allows for greater coordination of security operations in the northeast. However, the shift also raises questions about future security dynamics in areas that have experienced prolonged instability and competing territorial control.

The situation remains fluid, with regional actors closely monitoring how the vacuum left by departing forces will be managed and whether new security arrangements will emerge in affected areas.
