King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand arrived in China on Wednesday for a landmark state visit, the first ever by a reigning Thai monarch. The trip, made at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, commemorates 50 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations, first established in 1975.
The Thai government described the visit as a reflection of the “deep-rooted friendship and mutual understanding” that has developed between Thailand and China over five decades. During the stay in Beijing, King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida will tour prominent sites including the Lingguang Buddhist Temple and Beijing Aerospace City, with President Xi and his wife hosting a state banquet in their honor.
This is the monarch’s first major state visit since ascending the throne nine years ago. His trip follows a visit to Bhutan earlier this year, underscoring Thailand’s efforts to engage more actively on the international stage.
China is now Thailand’s largest trading partner and an increasingly important defense supplier. Despite Thailand’s formal alliance with the United States, Bangkok’s relations with Beijing have strengthened, driven by economic cooperation and shared cultural ties, as many Thais have Chinese ancestry.
