Opinion piece by David Williams: The rules-based international order is frequently described as a neutral framework of law and shared values. In truth, it is a post-war American construction, designed to stabilise the world on terms that suited U.S. power, interests and security.
After 1945, Washington shaped institutions that promoted open trade, freedom of navigation and collective security, all underwritten by American military dominance. The United Nations, NATO and the Bretton Woods system were not acts of altruism but instruments of order, intended to make U.S. leadership predictable and durable. The system benefits many states, but it was never meant to constrain its creator in the same way it constrains others.
