President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed hundreds of costumed guests to the White House on Thursday, October 30, 2025, for the annual Halloween celebration, despite the ongoing government shutdown and the president’s recent return from a six-day trip to Asia.
As dusk settled over the South Lawn, the couple made their entrance to an orchestral rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” The President, dressed in a blue suit, red tie, and “USA” cap, and Mrs. Trump, wearing a brown coat over an orange dress, handed out full-sized Hershey bars and Twizzlers in boxes bearing the presidential seal.

Children of military families, White House staff, and guests arrived in a colorful mix of costumes — from superheroes and princesses to tiny replicas of the first couple. Decorations featured carved pumpkins, autumn leaves, and orange and red mums, while construction walls hid ongoing work on Trump’s new White House ballroom, replacing the former East Wing.

Despite light-hearted moments, the event took place against a tense political backdrop. Trump urged Congress to end the shutdown, as disputes over healthcare tax credits and tariffs on Chinese imports continued to affect families — even raising the price of Halloween costumes this year.
