U.S. President Donald Trump said he asked Chinese President Xi Jinping not to provide weapons to Iran, according to comments made during a media interview. Trump stated that he sent a letter to Xi raising concerns about reports that China might supply military equipment to Tehran.
According to Trump, Xi responded by assuring him that China was not arming Iran. The U.S. president did not specify when the exchange took place but indicated that the response addressed concerns circulating in international media.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and a U.S.-led naval blockade affecting shipping routes in the Gulf. The situation has significantly disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global energy supplies.
Trump also suggested that diplomatic engagement with Iran could resume after recent talks ended without agreement. At the same time, he warned that countries supplying weapons to Iran could face economic consequences, including potential tariffs.
China has publicly denied allegations that it plans to arm Iran, while broader geopolitical uncertainty continues to affect global trade and energy markets. The White House has not provided further clarification on Trump’s statements.
