During a White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump sharply criticized Spain for failing to meet the new NATO military spending targets. Trump called Spain the only NATO member not demonstrating loyalty to the alliance.
“Spain has not come through. Spain has not been loyal to NATO. They’re the only one,” Trump said. He highlighted that while most NATO countries increased their defense budgets from the previous 2% to 5%, Spain refused to follow suit.
Trump said, “I think Spain should be reprimanded for that.” He described Spain’s decision as “very bad” but acknowledged that the issue is ultimately up to NATO and Spain to resolve.
This criticism underscores ongoing tensions within NATO regarding burden-sharing, especially as the alliance faces increased security challenges stemming from the conflict in Ukraine.
