Two Killed in Ukraine Despite Easter Ceasefire, Officials Say

Ukraine reported two people were killed in its eastern Donetsk region despite a 32-hour Orthodox Easter ceasefire, according to officials, as both Kyiv and Moscow accused each other of breaching the temporary truce.

Ukrainian authorities said Russian drone strikes hit multiple locations in frontline areas, including residential and civilian infrastructure, causing fatalities and additional damage. The attacks occurred during a short ceasefire period intended to reduce hostilities over the Easter holiday.

The governor of the Donetsk region said the deaths occurred in separate incidents linked to drone strikes, underscoring continued violence even as the truce was in effect. Local officials also reported damage to vehicles and buildings in affected areas.

Russia and Ukraine both accused each other of widespread violations of the ceasefire, which lasted approximately 32 hours. Each side reported hundreds or thousands of incidents involving drones, shelling, and small arms fire, though independent verification remains difficult.

The Easter truce, agreed amid ongoing international pressure for de-escalation, briefly reduced large-scale fighting but failed to halt frontline clashes entirely. The conflict has increasingly relied on drone warfare, with both sides using unmanned systems for reconnaissance and strikes.

Analysts say repeated breakdowns of temporary ceasefires highlight the difficulty of achieving lasting pauses in the war, as battlefield dynamics and mutual distrust continue to drive escalation.
