Hungary is set for a major political transition as opposition leader Péter Magyar prepares to become the country’s next prime minister after defeating long-time incumbent Viktor Orbán, marking the end of Orbán’s 16-year rule.
Magyar’s rise represents one of the most significant political shifts in Hungary in recent decades, as he moved from being a former ally of Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party to becoming its most prominent challenger.
He previously held diplomatic and administrative roles within the Hungarian state system and was once part of Orbán’s political network. He was also formerly married to Judit Varga, a senior Fidesz figure, before their separation in 2023.
His break from the ruling party came after a political controversy in 2024 involving a presidential pardon linked to a case of child protection abuse concealment. The incident triggered public backlash and helped bring Magyar into national prominence.
Following his departure from Fidesz, Magyar launched the Tisza political movement, which quickly gained traction among voters disillusioned with corruption allegations and economic challenges. The party performed strongly in European Parliament elections, securing around 30% of the vote.
Magyar’s campaign has focused on domestic issues such as cost of living, public services, and governance reforms. He has also criticised corruption and pledged to restore relations with the European Union, which has withheld funding from Hungary over rule-of-law concerns.
While he has taken a more critical stance on Hungary’s closer ties with Russia, he has remained relatively cautious on several social and foreign policy issues.
His expected leadership marks a potential realignment in Hungary’s domestic and European policy direction, particularly in relation to the European Union and institutional reforms.
