Armed attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, early Monday morning, killing a teacher and abducting at least 25 students. According to police, the incident occurred around 04:00 local time when a large group of armed men invaded the school and opened fire to create panic.
Security personnel on duty exchanged gunfire with the attackers, but the assailants managed to scale the perimeter fence and forcefully take the girls from their hostel. One staff member died while attempting to protect the students, and another was injured by gunfire and is now receiving medical care. Witnesses reported that the attackers marched the abducted students into nearby bushland.
Authorities have deployed additional police tactical units, military teams and local vigilante groups to support a coordinated search and rescue operation. Efforts are now focused on tracking the group through nearby forests and known escape routes.
Northern Nigeria has faced repeated school abductions over the past decade, with armed groups targeting students to demand ransom or negotiate with authorities. Nigeria has banned ransom payments, but the attacks continue. This latest incident is the first major school kidnapping since March 2024 and has left families in Maga anxiously awaiting news of their daughters.
