European Union top diplomat Kaja Kallas warned Monday that Russia is “gambling with war” following a series of Russian drone and military jet incursions into EU airspace. NATO has reinforced defenses along its eastern borders in response, accusing Moscow of deliberately testing the alliance’s air defenses with drone violations and jet flights over Estonia.
Speaking in Kyiv during talks on military and financial aid for Ukraine, Kallas emphasized the risk of escalation from these airspace violations and called for stronger European military deterrence alongside economic power. Ukraine continues to face renewed attacks on its energy infrastructure, forcing power cuts across seven central and eastern regions ahead of winter.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga condemned the attacks as “cynical,” aimed at undermining civilian morale during the harsh season. Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian oil refineries, conducting over 30 strikes since August to disrupt Moscow’s war funding, including a recent fire at an oil depot in Russian-occupied Crimea.
Tragically, a Russian drone attack in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region killed a married couple. Meanwhile, Kallas voiced EU support for supplying Ukraine with US long-range Tomahawk missiles to strengthen its defenses, despite Russian warnings that such deliveries would escalate the conflict.
