India Condemns Pakistan Airstrikes in Afghanistan, Cites Civilian Casualties

India has strongly criticised Pakistan’s airstrikes in Afghanistan, calling them an effort to shift focus from internal issues while reaffirming support for Afghan sovereignty.

India on February 22 condemned the airstrikes carried out by Pakistan in eastern Afghanistan, which reportedly killed nearly 20 civilians, including women and children. New Delhi described the action as another attempt to externalise internal failures and reiterated its backing for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

According to Indian officials, the strikes were particularly concerning as they took place during the holy month of Ramadan and resulted in civilian casualties. India said such actions undermine regional stability and violate established international norms governing cross-border conduct.

Pakistan stated that its air force carried out intelligence-based and selective operations targeting alleged militant hideouts linked to banned groups. Islamabad claimed the strikes were a retributive response to recent attacks within its territory and said multiple targets were hit in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces.

Afghan authorities rejected Pakistan’s claims, saying residential areas and a religious seminary were struck. Officials in Kabul said dozens of civilians were killed, including members of a single family. Afghanistan’s foreign ministry summoned the Pakistani ambassador and termed the strikes a provocative act and a breach of territorial integrity.

Afghanistan’s defence ministry also vowed a strong and measured response, accusing Pakistan of targeting civilians and religious sites in violation of international law and principles of good neighbourliness.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained strained due to repeated accusations over militant sanctuaries. India’s statement emphasised restraint, respect for sovereignty and protection of civilian lives as essential for regional peace.
