As Narendra Modi prepares to host Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on December 4–5, 2025, the upcoming summit could shape a deeper strategic alignment between India and Russia. Central to the talks will be India’s interest in acquiring additional squadrons of the S-400 Triumf air‑defence system and possibly expanding cooperation to include advanced defence platforms such as the Su-57 stealth fighter jet.
Beyond defence, a key agenda is financial cooperation. India and Russia are exploring linking India’s payment network RuPay with Russia’s Mir system to enable rupee–rouble trade settlements. This mechanism could help sustain bilateral trade and energy cooperation despite Western sanctions on Russia and pressure on dollar-based transactions.
With global tensions high over energy and security, India faces a diplomatic balancing act. While expanding defence and financial ties with Russia may strengthen its strategic autonomy, it could also draw criticism from Western partners concerned about sanction compliance and geopolitical alignment. The summit will test New Delhi’s ability to pursue its security and economic interests without undermining its broader international partnerships.
