Jenna Ortega Warns Against AI in Film, Emphasizes Human Creativity

Actress Jenna Ortega voiced concerns over the growing use of artificial intelligence in film and television, emphasizing the unique qualities of human creativity. Speaking at the Marrakech Film Festival, Ortega described AI-generated content as lacking the soul and unpredictable beauty that come from human experience.

“There’s certain things that AI just isn’t able to replicate… a computer has no soul, and it’s nothing we would ever be able to resonate with,” she said. Ortega expressed hope that audiences might eventually tire of AI-driven work, creating renewed appreciation for independent, human-made films.

Her comments reflect wider unease among filmmakers. “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho acknowledged AI’s potential benefits but joked about wanting to “destroy” the technology due to its risks to creative industries. Similarly, Celine Song, director of “Past Lives,” aligned with Guillermo del Toro’s stance, warning that AI could colonize minds and diminish the human essence in art.

Ortega highlighted the irreplaceable value of human collaboration, noting that working with a cinematographer involves sharing a lifetime of experience, failures, and creativity—elements that cannot be replicated by algorithms. She argued that preserving humanity in filmmaking is essential to capturing the complexities, challenges, and beauty of life.
