French President Emmanuel Macron urged European leaders to increase coordinated pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet,” vessels used to evade Western sanctions and fund Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Speaking at a summit in Copenhagen, Macron emphasized the importance of following France’s example in detaining blacklisted tankers. “It is extremely important to increase the pressure on this shadow fleet, because it will clearly reduce the capacity to finance this war effort,” he said. Macron added that temporarily holding aging vessels disrupts the business model and forces operators to change tactics.
On the issue of airspace security, Macron delivered a firm warning about drones violating European skies amid recent Russian incursions. “Drones which would violate our territories are just taking a big risk. They can be destroyed, full stop,” he said, underlining the need for a clear and decisive response to such threats.
Macron’s statements highlight France’s push for a united European front against both maritime sanction evasion and aerial security breaches linked to Russia.
