Nations Condemn Killings of UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

Canada, the United Kingdom, and several other countries have strongly condemned the killings of United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, calling for an immediate end to hostilities as violence intensifies in the region.

In a joint statement, countries including Australia, Japan, Brazil, and others expressed deep concern over the deaths of peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The statement highlighted worsening humanitarian conditions, with widespread displacement and growing civilian casualties linked to ongoing fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.

The condemnation follows incidents in which three Indonesian peacekeepers were killed. According to United Nations findings, one was reportedly killed by tank fire, while others died in an explosion believed to have been caused by a planted device.

The conflict in Lebanon has escalated since early 2026, with Israeli strikes launched after Hezbollah attacks contributing to over 2,000 reported deaths and displacing more than one million people.

The countries urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the safety of peacekeeping personnel. They also called for renewed diplomatic efforts to halt the violence, though prospects for a ceasefire remain uncertain amid broader regional tensions linked to the Iran conflict.

The statement reflects growing international alarm over the risks faced by peacekeepers and civilians alike, as the conflict continues to destabilize Lebanon and strain global diplomatic efforts.
