Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will convene an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss Israel’s response to what he described as Hamas’s violation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, The Times of Israel reported.
The move follows Hamas’s handover of additional remains that Israel says belong to a hostage whose body had already been recovered nearly two years ago. Netanyahu called the return of the remains a “clear violation” of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal, which came into effect on October 10. He said he would consult with Israel’s defense establishment on possible responses to the “violations.”
According to Israeli officials, the remains returned overnight on Monday were body parts of a hostage previously recovered by Israeli troops in Gaza. Over the course of the two-year conflict, Israeli forces have recovered the bodies of about 51 hostages, according to the Associated Press.
Hamas has maintained that it is struggling to locate the remains of hostages amid the widespread destruction in Gaza, while Israel accuses the group of deliberately stalling.
Meanwhile, Israeli police said that security forces killed three Palestinians during a joint army-police raid near Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, describing them as members of a “terrorist cell.”
