Pope Leo XIV has emphasised unity and peaceful coexistence during his Africa tour, as tensions continue with US President Donald Trump over remarks related to the Iran conflict.
Speaking aboard the papal plane during his travel between Algeria and Cameroon, the Pope said his visit aimed to highlight a message of peace across religious and cultural differences. He referred to his visit to the Great Mosque of Algiers and to sites linked to Saint Augustine.
“We have different beliefs, different ways of worshipping, and different ways of living, but we can live together in peace,” he said, adding that such a message is needed globally.
The exchange between the Pope and Trump followed comments by the pontiff on the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Pope Leo said a “delusion of omnipotence” is contributing to the conflict and called on political leaders to stop military actions and pursue negotiations.
He also described statements about destroying Iranian civilisation as unacceptable and called for reflection on political and humanitarian conduct.
Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, criticising the Pope and questioning his role in commenting on political matters. He said the Pope should focus on religious leadership rather than public policy.
The Pope has continued his Africa tour with a focus on interfaith dialogue and humanitarian outreach. The developments reflect the interaction between political leadership and religious authority during a period of international tension.
