A European citizens’ petition has reached one million signatures calling for the suspension of the EU–Israel Association Agreement, triggering a formal response process within the European Union.
The demand comes through the European Citizens’ Initiative, which allows citizens to propose policy actions to the European Commission. Crossing the one million signature threshold requires the Commission and the European Parliament to review and respond to the proposal.
The petition calls for a full suspension of trade and cooperation ties with Israel, citing concerns over civilian casualties and humanitarian conditions in Gaza. It states that Israel has violated obligations under international law and questions continued EU cooperation under existing agreements.
The EU–Israel Association Agreement, in force since 2000, forms the basis of bilateral trade, economic, and political relations. According to available data, total trade in goods between the EU and Israel reached €42.6 billion in 2024, making the EU Israel’s largest trading partner.
The initiative has gathered signatures from across all 27 EU member states. Organisers said the campaign aims to reach 1.5 million signatures before submission.
Under EU rules, authorities will now verify the signatures within three months. Once validated, the European Commission must issue a formal response outlining its position. The European Parliament is also required to hold a hearing with the organisers.
The demand comes amid continued conflict in Gaza and reflects growing public pressure within Europe over the EU’s external trade and foreign policy decisions.
