Report Finds Nearly 100 Palestinian Deaths in Israeli Custody Since October 2023

A new report by an Israel-based human rights group says at least 98 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since October 2023, with the actual number likely higher due to incomplete information on detainees from Gaza. The findings are based on official Israeli data obtained through freedom of information requests, cross-checked with forensic reports, testimonies, interviews and other records.

According to the report, 46 Palestinians died under the Israel Prison Service (IPS), while at least 52 people from Gaza died in Israeli military custody. The group states that deaths resulted from physical violence, medical neglect or both. It also notes that the fate of many Gazan detainees remains unknown after Israeli authorities halted updates to the Red Cross and stopped sharing detailed custody information during the early stages of the war.

Israeli authorities maintain that all procedures are lawful and that inmates receive proper care. They declined to comment on specific allegations.

The report lists 73 identified victims, including medical professional Adnan al-Bursh and 17-year-old Walid Khalid Ahmad, whose deaths were linked to abuse and malnutrition. Deaths were documented across several detention facilities, with the report describing the scale of fatalities as unprecedented and increasing over time.
