Rescue Efforts at Collapsed Indonesian Boarding School Shift to Recovery as Hope for Survivors Fades

Authorities in Indonesia have shifted their focus from rescue to recovery after failing to find signs of life at the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School, which recently collapsed. Suharyanto, head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, announced on Thursday that thermal drones and other equipment detected no additional survivors among the rubble.

The boarding school collapsed while construction workers were pouring concrete on the fourth floor. Officials believe 59 people remain missing under the debris. Relatives of the missing students expressed their grief openly, with many collapsing in anguish near the site.

Until now, rescue teams avoided using heavy machinery, fearing it might harm survivors trapped beneath the rubble. However, authorities have now authorized the use of excavators to assist recovery operations. The school site has been sealed off as responders continue their painstaking search.

The situation remains grim, with the smell of decomposing bodies reportedly permeating the area hundreds of meters away from the collapse site. Officials and families await further updates as the recovery process continues.
