Scrutiny Grows as Trump and Hegseth Deny Role in Second Caribbean Strike

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday distanced themselves from the decision to carry out a second strike on a suspected drug boat in the Caribbean, saying they were not aware of the follow-up attack. Trump told reporters he had not been consulted and still had not received a full briefing months after the incident. He said he relied on Hegseth for updates and believed commanders acted within their authority.

Hegseth said he watched the initial strike but left before it became clear that several people on the vessel had survived. He stated that Adm. Frank M. “Mitch” Bradley had full authority over operational decisions and that he learned about the second strike only hours later. Both Trump and Hegseth defended Bradley’s actions and emphasized support for military commanders.

Lawmakers from both parties have questioned the legality of striking survivors, with some warning that it may have exceeded acceptable limits. The Senate Armed Services Committee has requested full audio and video of the operation as part of its investigation. Calls for oversight have intensified as concerns grow about the broader conduct of operations in the region.
