The United States has voiced opposition to Israel’s annexation plans for the West Bank, with a White House official stating that a stable West Bank is crucial for Israel’s security and peace in the region. The comment follows heightened international backlash after Israel’s far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, and defence minister, Israel Katz, announced measures to extend Israeli control over Palestinian territories.
The new measures include facilitating the acquisition of land for illegal Israeli settlements, which have long been a point of contention under international law. This development has drawn sharp criticism from several Muslim-majority countries, including Egypt, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, who issued a joint statement condemning the move. They described Israel’s actions as an effort to impose unlawful sovereignty over Palestinian lands, intensifying settlement activities and displacing Palestinians.
The United Nations Secretary-General, along with several Western nations, has also condemned Israel’s decision. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the measures destabilizing, undermining the prospects for a two-state solution. The international community remains divided on the issue, with increasing pressure on Israel to halt its expansion efforts in the occupied territories.
