Video: Guadalajara in Flames as Army Operation Kills CJNG Leader

Violence swept across western Mexico after security forces killed the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel during a military operation.

Hundreds of fires lit up the skyline of Guadalajara as buildings and vehicles were vandalised following the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho. Cartel members set vehicles ablaze in nearly a dozen states and tore up roads to block military movements. Smoke rose over the tourist hub of Puerto Vallarta, and unrest spread into neighboring Michoacan, where the group also operates.

In Jalisco’s capital, residents stayed indoors as gunfire was reported in public areas. Schools were closed and public transport suspended. Armed men targeted petrol pumps, pharmacies, supermarkets and other businesses. A gas station employee said gunmen ordered people to leave before setting the property on fire, forcing civilians to seek cover. Footage showed passengers taking shelter at Guadalajara airport while heavy machinery was used to dig up sections of roadway.

Authorities said El Mencho was wounded during an attempt to detain him in Tapalpa and died while being transported to Mexico City for medical care. Four people were killed at the scene and two were arrested. Security forces seized armored vehicles, rocket launchers and other weapons. President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm, while Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus described the situation as critical.
